The Company
Our client is a fast-growing powerhouse in the private-label food sector, renowned for its innovation, market leadership, and deep-rooted heritage. Operating within a highly agile, matrix-led structure, they deliver best-in-class products while navigating the complexities of commodity pricing and evolving consumer trends. With ambitious growth plans, they are now seeking an exceptional Business Unit Controller (BUC) to lead one of their most strategic divisions.
The Role
As Business Unit Controller, you will own and drive full P&L management for major retail customers. This is a high-stakes, intellectually demanding role at the crossroads of category strategy, commercial leadership, and commodity pricing management. You will thrive in an environment where sharp commercial acumen, strategic thinking, and resilience are key to success.
Your Key Responsibilities:
- Lead Customer Partnerships – Build and strengthen relationships with top-tier UK retailers, anticipating their evolving needs and positioning your business as a strategic supplier.
- Master Commodity Pricing & Risk Management –
- Develop and execute long-term hedging strategies to manage price volatility and market fluctuations.
- Provide expert market insight to forecast trends and future-proof pricing strategies.
- Ensure sustainable profitability while de-risking financial commitments for both parties.
- Drive Category & Commercial Growth –
- Expand distribution and optimise product mix to maximise margin and sales performance.
- Lead NPD and category initiatives to maintain a competitive edge.
- Balance consumer needs with commercial strategy, leveraging data-driven decision-making.
- Influence at the Highest Levels –
- Operate confidently at Board and senior stakeholder levels, both internally and externally.
- Work cross-functionally across supply chain, marketing, finance, and procurement, ensuring alignment and commercial success.
- Navigate complex business scenarios, balancing short-term objectives with long-term strategic goals.
If you’re ready to lead, influence, and drive real commercial impact, the opportunity offers You the platform to propel your career to a "Head of/Board Level" role.
Candidate Requirements
This role is built for a high-calibre commercial leader with a track record of driving growth, profitability, and strategic partnerships in the food industry.
You will bring:
- Senior commercial experience in a leading own-label food business, managing major retail accounts.
- Proven expertise in commodity-driven categories (dairy, produce, grains, meat, poultry, chilled, etc.).
- A strategic, highly analytical mindset, able to interpret financial data, market trends, and pricing dynamics to drive decisions.
- Strong influencing skills, with the ability to engage and negotiate at board level.
- A hunger for fast-track career progression, with this role offering a clear pathway to Board level in the medium term.
Also considered:
Candidates from procurement, supply, or buying backgrounds who have a strong commercial mindset and a passion for working with major retail customers.
