Varo – Business Development Manager

Role, Positioning and Objectives

We are a small food brand with a growing range of ready to eat products who are looking to recruit a Business Development Manager to improve the organisation’s market position across the wholesale (cash and carry) market and major supermarkets.

You will:

  • Help define long term strategic goals
  • Build key customer relationships and identify new business opportunities

The role is field-based and covers the whole of the UK; therefore, a clean full driving licence is required.

Reports to: Varo Managing Director.

Day to day responsibilities of the business development manager:

  • Winning new customers and growing accounts of existing customers
  • Work with the management team to identify and evaluate new markets and profitable business opportunities, using market insight with regards to products and knowledge of competitors
  • Initiate and complete proposals and presentations for new business opportunities
  • Prepare campaigns and promotional activities to help push demand through our wholesale customers
  • Maintain excellent client relationships with potential new, as well as existing clients
  • Work with management team to develop, implement and achieve strategic sales plan and targets for the channel
  • Build strong customer relationships across the accounts including buying, supply chain, finance etc. at all relevant levels
  • On-going management of the sales forecast for named accounts

Essential Experience, Skills and Knowledge

Skills and experience required for the business development manager:

  • Full clean UK Driving licence is essential as this is a field-based role
  • Wholesale / Cash Carry Market knowledge and experience is *essential*
  • 5 years’ experience in Business/Sales Development
  • Relevant university degree is desirable but not essential for the right candidate

This role is highly commercial and requires:

  • The ability to build great relationships whilst delivering mutual value for both the customer and the brand
  • Ability to drive distribution and growth of the brand portfolio across the wholesale / Cash Carry and Independent Retail channel
  • Confidence in talking about category, trends and brands
  • Excellent commercial numerical acumen
  • Information networking, presentation skills, account management, Market Research skills
  • A good cross-functional communicator
  • Strong organisational skills
  • The ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Strong analytical/problem-solving skills
  • Proficient in Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint
