4 Tips For Instant Success In A New Role

Starting a new role is always a challenge, even more so when you’ve been with your previous employer for a considerable period; it’s easy to feel out of touch in a new company, with both the people and the processes. Being pushed out of your comfort zone can be disconcerting, and it’s not uncommon to question your decision to take that leap in your first few weeks.

We have put together our top tips for success, to help you to quickly settle into your new company and to demonstrate from the get-go why you are the right person for the job.

Network and Build Relationships Across The Business

We all recognise the importance of networking externally with clients and contacts, but we often forget to forge those relationships within our own company.  Being able to instigate change and bring positive results is largely reliant on having good relationships with those on your team and, beyond that, having good connections across other areas of the business can provide support on future projects.

Working closely with staff on the shop floor can also be the quickest way to find out which areas of the business need addressing and, importantly, where you can make the most impact. Make sure you:

  • Introduce yourself to as many people as you can
  • Listen to what people have to say and make sure you’re engaged in the conversation – whilst you might not be looking to change the matter they’re discussing, it’s important to ensure the person your speaking to knows you value and respect their opinion still
  • Be visible and available when you can – it’s worth investing extra time in the early days to show your worth and your enthusiasm, and to be remembered
  • Arrange team meetings, workshops, lunches and other get-to-know-you sessions
  • Identify key stakeholders as early as possible and use your meetings with them to understand their role within the business
  • If you are required to report to the board, try and request attendance to a meeting or a more informal gathering early on to facilitate introductions in a way that puts less pressure on you

Understand the Culture

Every company has its own culture and personality, and it’s important that you take the time to get to know it. When it comes to working on projects and making significant changes, you’re much more likely to see successful outcomes if you’ve been able to pitch your plans and ideas in a way that suits the business.  Rushing to start implementing changes based on your previous experience - without taking the time to learn about the business and its employees - can come across the wrong way.

Lead With Confidence

Being aware of the fact you are no longer in a position where you know and understand everything about your role - and the wider business - can leave you second guessing yourself. But – although something of a cliché - confidence really is key.

It’s important to remember that your previous experience and your skillset is of great value. If anything, experience in another business can be advantageous, as you provide an outside perspective on processes and management. Don’t underestimate the worth of fresh eyes or be afraid to give your honest opinion.

Whilst the change of environment brings with it new areas of understanding, it’s key that you approach all aspects of the role with the same level of confidence, not just for your own benefit but to ensure your new colleagues have that same level of confidence in you too.

Take Time To Step Back and Reflect

When you’re taking on a new role in an exciting and fast-paced environment, it’s all too easy to get carried away with the tide.  Try not to get caught up with small day-to-day issues; you want to tackle the bigger projects that will benefit the business the most and, on the back of that, you will improve your reputation and your standing within the company. Take the time to reflect on your role and your wider purpose so that you can focus on what you need to, to see the best results.
