Reporting to the Director of Operations of The Courtauld Institute of Art and the Chairman of SCTE, the Commercial Director is responsible for setting the commercial direction of SCTE and leading the team in delivering a variety of profitable commercial opportunities.

The Courtauld Institute of Art was founded in 1932 and is the most important centre for art history in the world.  Based in Somerset House, The Courtauld is home to the world’s foremost university for teaching and research in art history, conservation and curating and to a celebrated Gallery with an internationally renowned collection which ranges from the medieval period to the twentieth century.  This is an exciting and important moment in The Courtauld’s history.  It is embarking on a transformational capital development project - “Courtauld Connects” - which will revitalise its historic home, facilitate greater integration between the Institute and the Gallery and greatly increase opportunities for public access and engagement. It will also present significant opportunities for developing commercial operations. As the commercial arm of The Courtauld, SCTE plays a vital role in supporting the delivery of the visitor experience while making a significant contribution to The Courtauld’s long term financial sustainability. This new post will be responsible for developing and realising these new opportunities.

Suitable candidates are likely to be working in general business, commercial or hospitality management. Some background in the gallery/museum sector or the retail sector would also be of value but is not essential.

Suitable candidates will have a proven track record of outstanding customer service; the capability to manage diverse commercial activities profitably; and an ability balance strategic development with practical business management.
