The Role 

Airports have evolved and become far more than a place simply to board aircraft. At MAG we pride ourselves on providing the highest quality customer experience and as part of this commitment; we already offer a shopping experience comparable to a high street shopping centre. Our retail Model is evolving and we are currently recruiting two Heads of Retail to develop, deliver and improve our retail experience across our airport. These roles will design the long term strategy, responsible for revenue generation with an ambitious future growth trajectory, ensuring that the Retail space delivers on the transformational initiatives required to make MAG world class. 

Typical Duties will include:

  • The Head of Retail will develop and execute the Manchester Airport Retail Strategy, business plans and annual trading plans for specific categories, in support of the wider Retail and Commercial strategy 
  • Conduct regular commercial performance reviews with Category Concession field and Head Office teams to review performance, business plans and contractual KPI’s.
  • Will be accountable for the management and evaluation of complex, strategic and business-critical contracts.
  • Develop, maintain and manage key external relationships from shop floor to board level, with existing and potential customers, partners, contractors and other third parties to ensure the effective management of business agreements and contracts
  • Act as the industry expert, identifying relevant market trends, changes in the retail sector and competitor activities and advise the ALT & Board on impact, operational opportunities and risks with recommendations of anticipated actions.
  • Contribute to the Manchester Transformation Project providing market insight, future trends, capacity & space requirements & allocation and category mix to shape the future Manchester Retail business model. 
  • Work with the MAG-O digital strategy team to develop and execute the MAG Digital Strategy to support the delivery of the digital income targets, ensuring timescales are hit and external partners are engaged and supportive.

  • You will have substantial knowledge of relevant contractual and commercial methodologies, techniques and processes
  • Proven experience of developing Retail strategies, business plans and annual trading plans for specific categories 
  • Experience of drafting, negotiating and agreeing complex, strategic and business-critical contracts and business arrangements between customers, partners, contractors and other third parties and MAG, ensuring that terms and principals are delivered in practice.
  • Experience of planning and directing critical programmes of work for the retail function to ensure their delivery to plan and budget, and play a key role in cross-functional and organisation-wide projects to support their effective delivery.
  • Define and agree operational SLAs from supporting functions (IS, Capital Delivery, Assets, Finance, HR)
  • Direct and control the work and resources of the Retail business and ensure the recruitment and retention of the required numbers and types of well-motivated, experienced and developed staff to ensure that it achieves its mission and objectives and operates cost effectively.
  • You must have excellent communication skills a consultative approach and able to influence others to support objectives.
