I'VE GOT THAT JOB:

WAITROSE GRADUATE MANAGEMENT SCHEME
AILEEN WILSON - WAITROSE

I am Aileen Wilson.  I joined Waitrose in April 2007.

As is the case for many graduates, my initial attraction to the Waitrose Graduate Management scheme was my passion for good quality food, high standards of customer services and operating in a highly competitive environment.  In addition, I wanted to work for a company that could offer a diverse range of career opportunities.

Having worked for 3 months on the scheme it is very apparent just how diverse a range of opportunities there are available. Beyond the expected shop floor training, the extent of the work that goes on ‘behind the scenes’ really surprised me. I had also underestimated the emphasis on career development as well as the number and variety   of potential career paths that are available within the partnership. When I talk about my role and experiences within Waitrose, people are impressed with the amount of responsibility that the graduates are presented with after such a short period of time with the company and the roles that are attainable both within the branches and in head offices of both Waitrose and the John Lewis Partnership.

There is also a real emphasis on allowing you, the graduate, to identify areas that you are interested in and to let you get involved and show your potential in these areas. So far in addition to the ‘normal training’ I have been able to arrange a visit to one of our suppliers, explore a Waitrose farm, attend a deli tasting evening and quiz the company directors on the future plans for the business!

The journey so far towards being appointed as a Department Manager has required the use of a wide range of skills, and the development of new skills. In addition the job has brought me into close contact with a wide range of people, of different ages and backgrounds, which has been very interesting, challenging, and adds a daily variety to the job.  Although the scheme is a ‘fast track’ into management, it is still possible to develop skills at a pace that you are comfortable with and to have an input into your own development.

The social aspect of the graduate scheme should not be forgotten and regular contact with fellow graduates certainly keeps me on my toes and provides a bit of healthy competition!

Finally, I feel it is important to illustrate that being in branch for 18 months should not deter you from making an application. It is in fact an ideal opportunity to identify what the customer wants and what challenges the branches face to meet their needs.  It is a very rewarding job, within a company that will help develop you every step along the way.
