I'VE GOT THAT JOB:
HR ADVISOR
KATY PHILLIPS - COORS BREWERS
Job description:
I provide internal customers with operational HR services in the areas of recruitment, employee relations and learning and development.
What do you actually do?
The majority of my role is recruitment and working with/coaching line managers through employee relations issues.
How did you get into it?
I worked as a training officer in banking and was successful in getting on to the (then) Bass Brewers Graduate HR scheme. (Bass Brewers became Coors Brewers in February 2002.)
Best bits?
Being part of departmental management level meetings and having an input into decisions made.
Most likely to put you off?
Paperwork!
Most memorable moment?
Sitting in behind the scenes of an assessment centre for the first time where I shadowed an assessor. This proved to be a real eye-opener, particularly as I experienced it as a candidate just a few months previously.
Job-hunting tips?
Getting into HR is difficult without experience so if you can get some experience, unpaid or otherwise, you will be putting yourself at an advantage. A CIPD qualification (or part) is usually required so looking into doing this is also advisable.
Weirdest interview question?
I haven’t really had a weird interview question and now my job is to make sure there are no weird interview questions!
Least likely to be told at induction?
People are such interesting creatures – they make the job very colourful!
Skills most used?
Listening skills and a high element of diplomacy required.
What next?
The next immediate move, in terms of level, is to HR manager. In terms of HR experience, I’d like to do some international HR work and put my languages to use.
