Head of Sales – FMCG

£45-55,000 Basic, Excellent Bonus + Benefits

Our Client is a wholesaler of a whole range of grocery / FMCG items ( but mainly toiletries and ambient food products).

They have a cash and carry business, plus a delivered service and they sell to the following three channels :

. Independent retailers ( mostly single site but some with up to 10, maybe 15 branches ). Some are part of Symbol groups, others are completely independent.

. Other wholesalers.

. Export .

The jobholder will have no responsibility for the cash and carry business, only the delivered sales offering.

The company has now identified a profit opportunity in the major multiple retail channel ( ranging from discounters ( 99p stores, Poundland etc ) to top four grocery multiples, and anything in between ( maybe department stores ). They are looking for somebody to spearhead this penetration into the major multiple  retail channel. They don’t really know how much it could be worth to them, and this is one of the things that they expect the jobholder to be able to tell them. Sales into the major retailers will mostly be container loads/ one off special offers as opposed to stable category lines. Winning and managing business with these major multiples will take up approx. half of this person’s time.

The jobholder will spend ( approx. ) the other half of his/her time managing people, currently a team of five, comprising one BDM and a telesales person plus three office based export sales people. It is also envisaged that the company will undergo a period of rapid expansion under the leadership of this new sales manager / head of sales. It is therefore anticipated that this person will within a fairly short timescale recruit another three sales bodies, according to his/her own strategy.

This is what they are looking for :

. Somebody with exposure to toiletries / health and beauty. This category experience is almost essential.

. Somebody with at least two years man management experience, plus a man management story to tell.

. Somebody who has worked for a wholesaler / cash and carry Business. They specifically want to exclude candidates who have worked for manufacturers.

. Somebody who has experience of selling into top four and or discounter channels. Again, this experience of the major multiples retail channel is almost essential, although they might consider somebody with lots of export experience and contacts who can substantially increase export sales. Major multiple retail sales is what they’re really after.

. Must be used to selling branded products ( this is essential )

Salary - £45k to £55k basic ( £55k is the absolute tops ). Open ended bonus, but typically another £20k pa. Car by negotiation. Career prospects are excellent.

Living location – the role will involve being in the office most days ( with trips to see customers and occasional home working ). Candidates need to live within an hour ( max ) of their offices at Edmonton, North London ( near Enfield ).
